Missing manual series by Pogue are excellent references. Switching is 50 pages shorter than the OS X Yosemite book but covers much of the same content. Focus is helpful to Windows sufferers who have decided to jump ship. Returned my copy from Amazon due to shipment damage from poor packaging. Will buy today for $10 more from Barnes.
This is an invaluable book - to me, at any rate. It has information everywhere. To use it, I have had to read it in pieces and continually refer back to it. What is missing is a chapter on comparison of the underlying structures of Mac and non-Mac (primarily 'PC') systems. The move away from a strictly hierarchical structure in PC's etc. allows greater flexibility is storing and retrieving information and it would help understanding by showing a comparison of how tithe same task would be carried out in each system.
As a DOS and Windows user for 30 years, I found this manual to be well focused on the essential contrasts tween the PC and the Mac. Once I plowed through it, I was navigating a new Mac Book Pro with confidence. It has a thorough and accurate index, which is essential for quick look reference. I like manuals and this is a particularly good one.And a fun read, too.
Just what is needed for the new Mac user. After 30 years in Windows I at first found the Mac daunting. This book clearly showed me where things are no the iMac. I would recommend that Apple include it as an add-on for purchase or include it.
Very helpful and informative but also an enjoyable read. Highly recommended if you have been using WIndows PCs since when floppy discs were flexible like me. Old habits die hard. This book makes it fun to switch. I never even turn my old PC on--not true. I turn it on to play Scrabble as MAc does not have a Scrabble-like game and the versions made for the Mac have horrible reviews. Hope somebody fixes that!
I am totally new to Mac, and this book has saved my sanity. I am so glad I found this guide, as I am NOT very tech savvy, and the fact that the book is written in plain speak, and with humor, has helped me transition from PC to Mac.
This book has been very helpful in my switch to Mac. I am a casual user with simple needs. So far, I have been able to find what I needed without too much effort. On the other hand, a friend told my about the CMD key so I figured out that cut and paste use CMD, not CNTL. After a 10 minute search I found CMD-c and CMD v in the index and the Master Keystroke list at the end of the book.A book like this must by very difficult to organize. Full marks for the author. I recommend this book.
Not bad, but a lot of incorrect information. You do, actually, need virus protection for Macs, and yes, it is available for Macs. I'm an IT professional, and I'm afraid this book has too many errors in it. His other book, "OS X El Capitan" is actually much better, and more complete. Even if you're switching from a Windows PC, the other book is a better read for you.
